Summer time, and the living is easy…
Or so it should be, but the garden often gets neglected in the UK until the sun shines, and then there is much scurrying around to find something suitable to carry outside to sit on or eat off. By the time you realise that your outdoor room needs some TLC it’s often too late to enjoy it properly given our fleeting summers. If this is you, plan now for 2014!
Enlist some help from a garden designer who can advise on hard landscaping and planting, and come up with a design uniquely suited to you and your lifestyle. You can always take on the spade work yourself to save money, most good garden designers/landscape architects will offer design and planning only, as well as a full design and implementation service.
Our main picture this month shows the outside terrace of a recently completed new build project for which we provided the interior design. Care was taken in the planning stages to ensure that the interior space would connect with the outside, and a light and spacious dining room was created using a glass panel wall and roof lights, with full height terrace doors. The doors open right up so that the inside dining area becomes part of the terrace. The table seen in the foreground is within the dining room.
If you’re renovating a property, or building new, it’s well worth taking into account how you can maximise your outdoor space in the early planning stages. Tell your architect what you would like to achieve at the outset, and seek the input of an interior designer to ensure that the connecting space provides a seamless flow through into the garden. There are tricks that professional designers can employ which will have the effect of making even a small back yard seem larger, and which will entice you out.
Outdoor furnishings: Here are a few of our favourite outdoor pieces…

Oxleys of Chipping Camden in Gloucestershire manufacture beautiful natural garden furniture like this Belgian blue stone table with wicker chairs to complement it: www.naturaloutdoorfurniture.co.uk
The timeless stone is only found in this colour in Belgian quarries. It’s beautiful and individual characteristics are the result of its long geological evolution, and it takes on an increasingly beautiful patina with age.
Amongst their huge range of planters, IOTA produce powder coated steel planters in any RAL colour: http://commercial.iotagarden.com/cat/PRODUCTS
